In California, a new legislation is being proposed that will increase the penalties for illegally owning and operating medical spas.
In some cases, medical spas illegally administer treatments, like Botox, without the supervision of qualified personnel.
Medical spas offer a wide variety of popular treatments, including Botox and laser hair removal. While these treatments are considered medical, in some spas they’re being administered by non-qualified personnel.
According to California Law, medical businesses need to be owned (or owned in majority) by a physician.
“Alternative patient treatment sites, often called 'medi-spas,' have and continue to be a major and often misleading presence in the medical cosmetic skin care field,” said Assemblywoman Wilmer Amina Carter. “While the demand for cosmetic procedures is on the rise, the risk to patients resulting from inadequate supervision is unacceptable.”
Last April, the bill was approved by the state Assembly. It is currently awaiting approval from Governor Jerry Brown.
