The UK’s General Medical Council is banning doctors from prescribing anti-aging drugs, including Botox, over the phone unless they have met the patient previously.
Botox is a very dangerous drug in the hands of an unqualified individual. It needs to be applied correctly in order to be safe and effective. The GMC says that doctors need to have one face-to-face meeting with a patient before he/she can prescribe anti-aging drugs via telephone.
“There are good reasons why these are prescription-only medicines and we believe doctors should assess any patient in person before issuing a prescription of this kind,” commented Niall Dickson, chief executive of GMC.
Botox is commonly used to eliminate the appearance of wrinkles and age lines on a person’s face. It can also be used for other medical conditions, including excessive sweating and upper limb spasticity.
Apart from doctors, nurses can also apply Botox. People who are interested in getting Botox are recommended to seek professional consultations before booking the treatment.
These new rules on anti-aging prescriptions are set to be published sometime this week.
