UK’s National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence has given a go signal to Allergan’s Botox for selected medical applications.
According to NICE’s final guidelines, Botox can now be used to prevent prophylaxis and treat chronic migraines with certain prerequisites.
Sources say that the approval is a step forward, especially for chronic migraine sufferers. The Botox treatment option will be a big help for these people.
“On behalf of BASH, I welcome the decision by NICE to agree that this potentially life changing treatment can now be offered within the NHS,” explained Dr. Fayyaz Ahmed, chairman of the British Associations for the Study of Headache. “However, currently access to BOTOX® as a treatment option for eligible patients with chronic migraine is patchy across the country and I am hopeful that this Final Guidance will speed up commissioning of services.”
Chronic migraine is a debilitating condition. In the UK, studies estimate that more than 700,000 people suffer from it. Of that number, only 20% are receiving proper and effective treatments.
