Rylan McFayden from Drysdale was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of two. He is only one out of 25 kids who are in the Geelong region reaping the benefits of a Botox treatment program which began back in February at the McKellar Centre.
So far, Rylan has had a couple of botulinum toxin injections, commercially known as Botox, in order to relax his leg muscles enabling him to move his feet and walk. He attests that the treatment has made a huge improvement in his quality of life, in tandem with regular exercise and fiberglass supports.
Regional coordinator of the Victorian Pediatric Rehabilitation Service Theresa Clark explains that "after the botox, he walks a lot better and it keeps his feet flatter when he's walking," adding that "towards the end when the botulinum toxin starts wearing off, he gets a lot of pain and cramping in his legs at night... when he has the injections again he sleeps a lot better because he doesn't have the pain and the cramping in his legs."
