Convicted drug cartel queen Sandra Avila Beltran has been having an easy time in prison. The Mexican in-mate was reportedly availing beauty treatments inside her prison cell at the Santa Martha Acatitla women's penitentiary. A prison authority revealed that a doctor had paid Beltran a visit and carried out an unauthorized Botox procedure. The source adds that both the prison's medical director and warden had been fired.
Beltran, notoriously known in drug rings as the Queen of the Pacific, is an alleged leader of the Sinaloa cartel. She started serving her sentence at Santa Martha as early as 2007. She is being held for suspicion of conspiring with organized crime, money laundering and drug trafficking. Beltran had been acquitted by a judge back in December but remains in prison due to an appeal made by prosecutors handling her case.
Prosecutors are also looking into Beltran's connection with a drug case back in 2001 involving 9 tons of cocaine being transported aboard a fishing vessel en route to the U.S. The ship had been seized along Mexico's west coast on the port of Manzanillo. Despite denying the allegations, Beltran faces possible extradition to the U.S. for prosecution.
