The American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of Botox to treat spasms in the elbow, wrist, and fingers for adults.
The FDA announced that it approved the anti-wrinkle drug as a treatment for spasticity in the flexor muscles, a condition that normally resulted from stroke, brain injury or multiple sclerosis. This makes the muscles stiff and painful, which affect a person’s daily functions.
Botox works by blocking the connections between the nerves and the muscles, which temporarily paralyze the spastic muscle.
However, the treatment comes with a warning. Botox can spread to other parts of the body, causing difficulty in breathing and swallowing, which could prove to be life-threatening.
