Court case puts Allergan on the ropes PDF Print E-mail

Dee Spears of Potter County Texas has taken Allergan to court, accusing the Botox manufacturer of killing her seven-year-old daughter in 2007.

Kristen Spears was only six years old when she first received Botox. The child received the anti-wrinkle drug to treat muscle spasms, which were caused by cerebral palsy.

However, unlike the cosmetic application, Kristen had larger doses—which is said to be the reason of the child’s demise.

Dee Spears is now accusing Allergan of promoting an untested and off-label application of Botox.

Whether Mrs. Spears wins the case or not, this whole incident will affect the safety record. Allergan has never experienced an accusation at this scale. Usually, there were released studies and research that connected Botox to deaths. However, this is a court case against the company. And it will be broadcasted through newsrooms across the nation.

As Dee Spears stated in an interview with ABC News, “I am here because I believe Botox was the cause of her [Kristen] death.”

As a response, an Allergan spokesperson stated that the company was sympathetic about the mother’s loss. However, the company is confident that once the evidence is carefully analyzed it will show that Botox had nothing to do with Kristen’s death.
