According to a new British report, more and more old women are getting rejuvenation treatments, like Botox, amidst fear that they will be replaced by younger females.

Statistics indicate that most women over the age of 55 are planning to invest in non-surgical facial procedures, like Botox and chemical peels. Researchers are calling this phenomenon the “Arlene Effect.”

The name was created in reference to UK celebrity Arlene Phillips. The 66-year-old judge of the TV show “Strictly Come Dancing” was recently replaced on her hosting gig by a younger singer, Alesha Dixon.

According to the Harley Medical Group, Britain’s biggest cosmetic surgery provider, the number of inquiries from 55-plus women rose by nine percent last year.

“It's interesting to see that pressure in the workplace is a key driver for women of more advanced years, given the current high level of competition for jobs,” said Liz Dale, director of the group. “Women over 55 have really boosted our non-surgical market, which now accounts for 29 per cent of our total revenue.”

The report also cited that the second most common reason for getting the treatment just behind wanting to “look younger as they feel.”

A North Adelaide-based cosmetic physician Dr. Anne Evans said that she experienced a 10-15 percent rise from Botox procedures last year. She believes that people like Botox the most because it is cheap, fast, and effective.

“Quite honestly, I think Botox is the new lipstick,” says Dr. Evans.
