The Headache Care Center is now researching if Botox—a drug known to eliminate wrinkles—can alleviate headaches.
Migraines can force patients to take chances on doctors that prescribe drugs, which are not familiar to patients. That’s why it’s necessary to research about the prescribed medications before anything is to be confirmed.
"This [Botox] is injected in the muscles under the skin. Typically, about 15 different sites are injected across the forehead, into areas above the eye and into the temples and around the back of the head," explained Dr. Roger Cady, who is currently studying the effects of Botox on migraines.
During a migraine, a brain chemical sends signals to the brain that indicates pain. Some doctors believe that Botox paralyzes these chemicals to alleviate headaches. “We are studying it and, ideally, the FDA will look at this and make a determination whether it's effective," claimed Cady.
While this could be a breakthrough for the cosmetic treatment, it still has a downside. Generally speaking, medical insurance does not cover Botox injections, which can cost up to $1000 per treatment. And with today’s economic conditions, why not settle for an aspirin?
