Buy and sell website eBay has promised to remove all illegal Botox advertisements on their page. This after the website discovered over 240 unlawful Botox advertisements during a 5-day screening. 16 companies and individuals were found advertising the prescription only medicine to the public, and many consumers are unaware that these advertisements are actually breaking the law.

“Some of the adverts may lead people to think that having Botox is as easy as getting your nails done,” posited Jenny Driscoll, a Health Campaigner. “But it’s a powerful natural poison which can have serious side effects. We’re not against the treatment, but people need a proper consultation to make sure they don’t find themselves at risk.

Illegal advertisements offered discount vouchers for Botox treatments and encouraged consumers to bring their friends for a markdown. Others even included celebrity photos to tantalize the browsers.

The MHRA and the Advertising Standards Authority is now acting upon the issue. These institutions will now work on regulations so that advertisers will take a greater responsibility by implementing stricter restrictions.

“We are pleased eBay responded quickly to our complaint, and look forward to seeing positive changes on the site,” said Driscoll. “The regulators need to not only clampdown on these adverts, but ensure that companies and individuals are aware that Botox advertising is illegal. As the popularity of cosmetic treatments grows, the issue must be dealt with to protect consumers.”
