In UK, the New General Medical Council Rules require that doctors vet patients before undergoing Botox treatments. The authoritative body will also ban ‘Botox parties,’ and prevents nurses and beauticians from administering the procedure.
Watchdog Which? has warned consumers about Botox parties through the Web. There was a reported case wherein one nurse was found to be organizing parties on eBay, where she injected the cosmetic treatments to drunken patients.
While Botox is a prescription drug, there are no stipulations as to who can inject it—in fact anyone can. Prior to the new rules, doctors can prescribe Botox treatments without even seeing patients. It can be administered by non-medics.
“From now on, doctors must assess the patient receiving the Botox. They can't just make a blanket direction,” said Michael Keegan from the GMC policy and ethic team. With these new standards and regulations, doctors will be better able to cater to their patient’s needs.
