The American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have approved derma fillers or soft-tissue fillers as a bona fide treatment for facial wrinkles. However, manufacturers are prohibited from marketing the product with non-approved claims (For example: plumper lips and more youthful hands).

The FDA has posted valuable patient information on the agency’s website. The agency strongly encourages that wanting patients read up on the treatments first, before they purchase the service. The FDA also confirms that the effects of the treatments are only proven for facial treatment.

In the FDA website, it is said that all dermal fillers have the potential to cause long-term problems. Some temporary fillers, like collagen, are also linked to temporary complications, while some long-lasting fillers can cause long-term complications.

The list of FDA-approved fillers include: Cosmoderm, Cosmoplast, Restylane, Sculptra, Artefill A, Evolence, among others. For more information, log on to the FDA website.
